96th Infantry Division Awarded Presidential Unit Citation

The long delayed Presidential Unit Citation for Heroic Service during the Battle of Okinawa has finally been approved by the U.S. Army Chief of Staff and The Secretary of The Army.

Word of this approval was received from the Army Awards Branch on January 22, 2001.  We have received the Presidential Unit Citation Certificate and Citation documents.   Also, an Army General Order No. 29 dated 31-December 2001, confirmed the U.S. Army Award of The Presidential Unit Citation. The 96th Infantry Division is now one of only 4 entire Army Division awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for heroic action during World War II. Pertinent documents are posted below.

The U.S. Army formally presented The Presidential Unit Citation during an awards ceremony on July 27, 2001 at our Omaha, Nebraska Reunion.

Color copies of the Presidential Unit Citation Certificate and Citation document are for sale by the Ladies Auxiliary of The 96TH Infantry Division.  Contact Ruth Siefert at 1-218-659-2891 if interested.
